Make the budgets close.

A spacecraft design is a set of promises that all have to be kept at once: enough power, enough storage, mass within limit, balance within tolerance. Your team will put two designs through the same mission and check every budget, not just the ones that pass.

Two designs, one mission. Which one actually closes every budget it has to?

The idea behind the mission

Two designs, the same mission. Each is checked against its own stated limits, and every check has to hold.

Every budget has to close

Spacecraft design is constrained on several axes at once. A design with generous power can still be stopped by mass, or balance, or storage. Engineers check each budget against a stated limit and treat any one that does not close as a blocker, however comfortable the others look.
