The mission
Space is not a good place to lose heat. There is no air to carry it away, so a spacecraft running its camera and radio has to get rid of that heat through its own structure. Your team will run the same demanding workload on two spacecraft and see how differently they cope.

What to say at Grades 11–12
These prompts come from the academic layer, so they change with the depth you selected.
- Theory
- Frame the trade using performance criteria and bounded policy/language where allowed. Stage intent: limits.
- Prediction
- Predict the trade outcome against named criteria.
- Running the Twin
- Use existing safe grammar or bounded controls only; never arbitrary hosted code. Runtime remains the frozen Twin; this plan does not execute physics.
- Checkpoint
- Check criteria, uncertainty, and forbidden claims.
- Analysis
- Evaluate and optimise within the frozen Twin limits. Evidence intent: temperature/power plot + envelope/trade explanation.
- Engineering decision
- Record an engineering memo decision that remains software-authoritative.
- Limitation
- Name at least one frozen-model limitation that this experiment cannot answer.
- Provenance
- Keep simulated, simulated_sensor, estimator_state, derived, reference, and measured distinct. Never label simulated as measured.

While they work
- The payload workload is identical in both runs. Any learner explaining the difference by the payload has not read the setup.
- The small satellite reaches a much higher peak. Ask what would happen to real electronics at that temperature.
- This is the same runtime as the shadow mission but a different scenario. There the driver was darkness; here it is the spacecraft working hard.
Can the learner explain the temperature difference in terms of the spacecraft, given that the workload was identical?

Misconceptions to watch for
Authored lesson design — what a class reliably gets wrong here, and where you can catch it. Not a claim about any learner.
“The temperatures differ because one spacecraft's payload is working harder.”
The payload workload is identical in both runs. Send the learner back to the setup: any explanation resting on the payload has not read it.

Review & extension
What a good reflection contains
Which spacecraft property most influenced temperature, and what physical measurement would you need before trusting the result?
- Attributes the temperature difference to the spacecraft, not to the payload, which is identical in both runs.
- Names the peak temperature reached by the smaller spacecraft and says what it would mean for real electronics.
- Distinguishes this scenario — the spacecraft working hard — from the eclipse mission, where the driver was darkness.
If they finish early, or go further
- Set the thermal limit (Grades 9–10 and above)
Choose a temperature you would refuse to exceed, justify it, then say which of the two spacecraft your limit rules out and by how much.

This mission and the eclipse mission both end with a battery under pressure, for different reasons. Write one sentence for each that names its actual driver.
Home mission
Home mission: nowhere to put the heat
Find something at home that gets warm when it works - a laptop, a charger, a lamp. Find where its heat escapes. Then write one sentence on what would happen to it if there were no air around it at all.

Hold this line
- The temperature and battery numbers are produced by a model. Nothing here was measured on a real spacecraft.
- The two spacecraft are teaching profiles, not real hardware designs.
- This lesson does not show that either design would survive a real mission.
