Stage 1 of 7

Mission

Who you are, what you are finding out, and what success looks like.

Showing stage 1 of 7: Mission

Every orbit, your spacecraft passes behind the Earth. For that stretch there is no sunlight, no power from the panels, and everything has to run off the battery. Your team will send two different spacecraft through the same shadow and work out which one comes through it in better shape.

When the Sun disappears, which spacecraft copes better - and how would you know?

Your role
Spacecraft energy-budget engineer
Objective
Compare two spacecraft profiles through the same modeled eclipse and recommend the more resilient energy strategy.
Success looks like
Run both profiles, compare generation, consumption, and battery state, then make a bounded recommendation with a limitation.

Learning outcomes · Grade 6

What you should be able to do, and the evidence that shows it.

  • 01By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to describe what happens to the spacecraft battery while it is in the shadow of the Earth, and demonstrate this by pointing to the shaded part of the battery chart.
  • 02By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to state that a spacecraft in shadow makes no electricity from its panels and must use stored energy, and demonstrate this by recording that expectation before the run.
  • 03By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to say that these battery and temperature numbers come from a model rather than from a real spacecraft, and demonstrate this by naming one thing the model does not cover.
