Stage 1 of 7

Mission

Who you are, what you are finding out, and what success looks like.

Showing stage 1 of 7: Mission

A spacecraft cannot see itself. Everything it reports comes from instruments, and instruments are never perfect. Your team will fly the same manoeuvre twice, changing nothing except the quality of the instruments, and find out what that does to what the spacecraft knows about itself.

If the instruments get worse, does the spacecraft get worse - or does it just stop knowing where it is?

Your role
Guidance and sensing engineer
Objective
Separate simulated truth from estimated state while comparing perfect and realistic instruments.
Success looks like
Run both sensor profiles, distinguish truth from estimate, choose evidence, and explain the model's instrument limit.

Learning outcomes · Grade 6

What you should be able to do, and the evidence that shows it.

  • 01By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to describe the difference between where the spacecraft actually was and where it thought it was, and demonstrate this by pointing to both lines on the chart.
  • 02By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to state that an instrument can be wrong even when the spacecraft is working correctly, and demonstrate this by recording that expectation before the run.
  • 03By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to say that these numbers come from a model rather than from a real spacecraft, and demonstrate this by naming one thing the model does not cover.
