Stage 1 of 7

Mission

Who you are, what you are finding out, and what success looks like.

Showing stage 1 of 7: Mission

The moment a CubeSat leaves the launcher it is tumbling, cold and silent. Before it can do anything useful it has to stop spinning, find the Sun to charge, turn its antenna towards Earth and get a message through. Your team will run that sequence and work out which step is holding the whole mission back.

Every step scored something. So which one is actually stopping the mission?

Your role
Early-orbit operations engineer
Objective
Inspect a bounded deployment sequence and decide which step prevents a safe first-contact attempt.
Success looks like
Run the sequence, select the decisive state evidence, make an operations decision, and identify a limit of the software run.

Learning outcomes · Grade 6

What you should be able to do, and the evidence that shows it.

  • 01By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to name the steps a spacecraft has to get through before it can talk to Earth, and demonstrate this by listing them in order from the mission evidence.
  • 02By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to state which step of the mission went least well, and demonstrate this by pointing to the lowest bar in the evidence.
  • 03By the end of this mission, the learner will be able to say that these mission results come from a model rather than from a real launch, and demonstrate this by naming one thing the model does not cover.
